The bksb Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Assessment (PLTS) comprises an initial assessment and six evidence-generating activities designed to develop the skills needed to enhance the learner’s employability.
The PLTS initial assessment poses a series of questions regarding 37 PLTS outcome statements and calculates the individual’s favoured learning type, e.g. creative thinker, independent enquirer, etc.
The PLTS evidence-generating activities are based around employability skills. Completion of these six individual and group activities will provide evidence of the completion of all 37 PLTS outcome statements (essential for Ofsted inspection). It will also provide evidence for certain units within personal and social development and work skills courses, Functional Skills in speaking, listening and communication, the development of essential skills in reading and writing, and act as a resource for work placement preparation for Diploma students.
The Skills Funding Agency, Department for Education, and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills have concluded that an intermediate level Apprenticeship framework must specify that apprentices are to achieve the standards of attainment set out in the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PTLS) national outcomes. In order to achieve the six PLTS outcomes, apprentices will have to demonstrate the following skills: independent enquiry, creative thinking, reflective learning, team working, self-management, and effective participation. It must also specify where achievement of the PLTS is located within the Apprenticeship framework, either within a qualification or elsewhere, and how achievement is to be evidenced.
