Access to Education (Surrey County Council) 2018-07-12T15:41:44+00:00

Project Description

Name: Sara Wright

Role: Literacy and Numeracy Tutor. I work for the team that educates children who are not in school for Surrey County Council. My work is mostly 1:1 and takes place in student homes or public places such as libraries and youth centres.

“bksb provides a good structure for students to work through the functional skills qualification.”

How do you use bksb with your learners?

I use bksb to support my learners working towards functional skills qualifications. A small number will sit functional skills exams with me, most will move on to alternative provision and may continue their studies there. We occasionally work with students who will return to school and we do have access to bksb’s GCSE resources for students where this is relevant.

What impact has it had on your learners?

Students who stay with us for an extended period of time become confident in using the bksb platform and enjoy tracking their progress through the course. We have very small numbers of students actually taking the exam with us but those who have passed and working through the interactives, skills checks and exam practice has supported them to achieve their functional skills qualifications.

Would you recommend bksb to other providers?

Yes. bksb provides a good structure for students to work through the functional skills qualification but they do still need access to other resources to widen their reading and extend their writing. In maths most students need further practise to embed skills before they are prepared to take the skills check.
