Minister of State for Apprenticeship and Skills Post Axed

The Department of Education has announced that there will no longer be a dedicated Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills.

Gavin Williamson, who was himself appointed as the new Education Secretary, will take on the brief for apprenticeships and skills. Williamson will be supported by the Minister for Children, Kemi Badenoch, for the brief.

UCU acting General Secretary Paul Cottrell responded by saying:

“We do not believe losing the dedicated skills minister is a positive step for further education, or suggests the sector is held in high regard by the new administration.”

Despite the removal of the post, new Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that further education is a priority.
