Angela Rayner, the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, has been appointed as the new Shadow Education Secretary.
The move comes amid a wave of resignations by Labour MPs seeking a change in leadership. Ms Rayner is the third MP to hold the post since the Brexit decision. Pat Glass said she had stepped down from the post “with a heavy heart” because the “situation is untenable”.
Before Ms Rayner entered Parliament, she worked for Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as a care worker and subsequently served as convener of UNISON North West.
Ms Rayner was elected MP for Ashton-under-Lyne in 2015.
In June 2016, Ms Rayner was promoted to Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities before becoming Shadow Education Secretary in July 2016.
