New Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education

The government has announced that Jonathan Slater will be taking over from Chris Wormald as Permanent Secretary for the Department for Education (DfE).

Speaking about his new appointment, Jonathan Slater said:

It’s a tremendous honour to have been given the opportunity to lead this wonderful department, supporting Nicky Morgan and her ministerial teams in their efforts to give all of our children the very best education and opportunity possible.

Mr Slater’s appointment was made by the Prime Minister (David Cameron), in agreement with the Cabinet Secretary (Sir Jeremy Heywood), and the Education Secretary (Nicky Morgan), following an open competition.

Nicky Morgan expressed her delight at Slater’s appointment and claims he will bring “invaluable expertise” from leading major delivery programmes at both the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Defence, as well as his background in local government.

Jeremy Heywood echoed Ms Morgan’s comments and said that Mr Slater “has a real passion for education and helping all children fulfil their potential.”
