On-screen Maths Tests for Primary School Pupils

As the Government continues their drive towards numeracy and literacy excellence for all, it has been unveiled that a new on-screen check will be used to test pupil’s mental arithmetic before they leave primary school. At age 11, all children in England will be expected to know their times tables right through to 12×12.

The use of on-screen technology for a National Curriculum test will be a first, and will mean instant feedback will be available to pupils and tutors. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan says that the tests will “…help teachers recognise those pupils at risk of falling behind”, starting in 2017. A pilot will take place this summer in around 80 primary schools, before the checks are implemented nationwide.
