How is bksb used in colleges?

The bksb solution is a vital component in the success of most colleges. In fact, 89% of colleges use our products – that’s more than 580,000 college learners, who may be studying Functional Skills, Digital Skills or GCSEs.

With the wide range of learners studying in colleges, English and maths programmes have to be particularly flexible – some learners may not visit college very often, some may never visit if they are enrolled on a distance learning programme. bksb is a fantastic tool for flexible delivery due to its responsive nature – learners and tutors can access our online platform at any time, wherever they are based.

Most Further Education colleges assess every learner’s ability in English and maths to ascertain their suitability for their chosen vocational course. The bksb Initial Assessment utilises AI and Item Response Theory to provide an accurate reflection of this level as a start-point.

Typically, they will then undertake a Diagnostic Assessment during induction. This assesses their skills across all topics within their identified level, and produces an individual learning plan (ILP) highlighting strengths and weaknesses. This ILP forms the basis of their subsequent English and maths learning.

The bksb learning resources feature engaging video content which can be used during structured lessons, or as part of distance learning. The Progress Checks then assess a learner’s progress through each module. Having developed their skills, learners then have access to our Exam Practice to ensure they are ready and confident for taking the qualification.

Supplementing the main learning pathway outlined above, colleges can also access our vocational learning resources. These help to motivate and engage learners, and show them the relevance of English and maths skills to their chosen career path.

Underpinning this whole process, colleges receive powerful reporting and data analysis. Inspectors look to triangulate evidence when reviewing the performance of a college’s English and maths delivery. The tracking and reporting facilities in bksb provide the required data via in-depth reports. Learner achievement and progression is evidenced and performance can be more easily managed, helping colleges to fulfil expectations for inspection and funding.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are the fundamental English and maths skills that people need for their working and personal lives. Individuals can study for the qualifications in practical ways and apply core skills to real-life situations. Successive governments have championed these flexible courses to equip people with the essential skills they need to succeed.

English and maths are essential subjects that are included in most training and education programmes. They are a required component of Diplomas, Foundation Learning Programmes and Apprenticeships. Functional Skills can be studied as stand-alone qualifications or as a stepping stone to GCSEs.

Focus Functional Skills is our online teaching and learning resource designed to improve candidates’ essential skills, knowledge and understanding of English and maths required to sit their Functional Skills exams.

The EdTech platform is fully compatible with desktop, tablet and mobile devices and can be accessed remotely for distance learning all via the bksbLIVE 2 learning platform.

Digital Skills

Following a report from the Department for Education, it is estimated that 1 in 5 adults lack basic digital skills. This is a worrying statistic, because given the accelerating pace of change in our technologically dependent society, these skills can only become ever more important.

Having been mapped to the Essential Digital Skills Framework, our latest course introduces students to the digital world, from using everyday devices to  solving technical issues. Covering five topic areas at both Entry Level and Level One, bksb’s diagnostic assessment, comprehensive learning resources and progress checks contain everything your learners will need, including videos, interactive activities and jargon-busting glossaries.   Fully compatible with desktop, tablet and mobile devices, our award-winning eLearning platform can also be accessed remotely in order to enable distance learning.

GCSE

GCSEs are Britain’s rigorous level two qualifications, traditionally taken in the last two years of secondary education. They were introduced in 1988 to replace O-Levels and CSE exams, and were the first qualification at Level 2 to include coursework as well as examinations.

GCSE Achieve is a leading EdTech package to support students in developing their English and maths skills. Accessible online both in the classroom and at home, our step-by-step process is designed to improve candidates’ essential skills, knowledge and confidence in readiness for taking their GCSE exams.
