The Department for Education have confirmed the merger of the Education Funding Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, with the new Education and Skills Funding Agency operating from April onwards.

The newly formed entity will oversee the funding for apprenticeships, adult education, further education, secondary schools and primary schools, as well as school building programmes. The Secretary of State for Education, Justine Greening, stated that the merger will provide a “joined up approach to funding and regulation…with improved accountability and better service”.

As reported in the TES, both the AELP and AoC have welcomed the change. AoC Chief Executive, David Hughes, described the merger as “the perfect opportunity to simplify the system and make it more efficient and cost-effective”, whilst Mark Dawe, Chief Executive of the AELP, said that the merger “makes a great deal of sense” and hopes that funding processes will become much simpler.
