In the annual autumn statement, the chancellor updates MPs on the government’s taxation and spending plans, based on the economic projections provided by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). Included in these plans are post-16 education and how government policies will be funded and implemented.

Both the Association of Colleges (AoC), and AELP (Association of Training Providers) utilise their respective positions representing their members to influence government plans.

Here is the AoC’s statement, including their two key recommendations:

  1. HM Treasury should set a medium term target to increase spending on education and training to 5% of GDP and direct a share of the additional funding to post-16 education.
  2. The management of education spending should be reformed to improve efficiency, to allocate funds to areas of greatest need and to provide more predictability.

The AELP released a two-page briefing note prepared for sharing with MPs and delegates at the main party political conferences this year, which covered the Apprenticeship Levy reforms on one side and their wider agenda for employment and skills on the other.
